Adding Numbers to 10

In short: To add within 10, start with the bigger number and count on the smaller one. Order never changes the total, so 3 + 5 and 5 + 3 both make 8. Adding zero keeps a number the same.

How to add numbers to 10

Adding within 10 puts two small groups together to find how many you have in all — the two numbers you add are the parts, and the number you land on is the total. Here is the trick that makes it fast: you do not have to count both parts from one. Start with the bigger number, keep it in your head, and count on the smaller one.

For 2 + 6, don't count "1, 2... 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8." Flip it to 6 + 2, hold 6, and count on two: "seven, eight." Same answer, half the work. And if one part is 0, there is nothing to count on, so the number stays exactly where it is — 0 + 7 is still 7.

  1. Look at both numbers and find the bigger one.
  2. Say the bigger number out loud and hold it in your head.
  3. Count on from there, once for each unit in the smaller number.
  4. The last number you say is the total.

Counting on works because the bigger group is already counted the moment you name it — saying 5 stands in for all five objects at once, so there is no reason to recount them. The one real insight of adding within 10 is that you can pick up either part first without changing the answer, which is exactly why you always start with the bigger one.

Common mistakes

Counting the first number twice

For 4 + 3 a student holds 4 but then counts the 4 again as their first step: "four, five, six." They stop one early and get 6 instead of 7.

Fix: When you count on, the first word you say is the next number, not the number you are holding. Hold 4, then say "five, six, seven" while lifting one finger each time.

Taking away instead of adding

The plus sign gets read as a minus sign, so 5 + 3 is worked as 5 - 3 = 2. The groups get pulled apart instead of joined.

Fix: A plus sign means put together, so the total must be bigger than either part. If your answer is smaller than 5, you took away by mistake. 5 + 3 is 8.
