"She's fine at everything else. But the moment the maths book comes out, she's a different child."

If you have said some version of that sentence — to a teacher, to a partner, to yourself at the kitchen sink — you have already diagnosed the condition. You just may not have known it had a name. The bright, chatty child who goes quiet and small when the workbook opens; the stomach ache that reliably arrives on test mornings; the tears over homework that took four minutes last month and forty tonight.

This is maths anxiety. It is real, it is measurable, it is remarkably common — and, most importantly, it is neither a personality trait nor a life sentence. Here is what it is, where it comes from, and what actually helps.

What maths anxiety is (and what it isn't)

Maths anxiety is a genuine stress response — racing heart, dread, avoidance — triggered specifically by doing or even anticipating maths. It is not drama, not laziness, and not a negotiating tactic to get out of homework. Researchers have measured it for decades, and Gerardo Ramirez and colleagues have found it is already present and measurable in children as young as 6 or 7 — first grade, before most children can spell "anxiety".

Nor is it rare or local. PISA, the OECD's international assessment, has repeatedly found high levels of maths anxiety among 15-year-olds in every participating country — from Finland to Brazil to Korea — and a strong negative correlation between anxiety and maths performance across the board.

Whatever is happening at your kitchen table in Melbourne, Mumbai or Manchester, it is also happening in a few million other kitchens tonight.

The signs shift with age. In the early years, it tends to be physical and behavioural: stomach aches on test days, elaborate stalling rituals before homework, sudden urgent thirst the moment the maths book appears. By around age 8 it becomes verbal — the flat, rehearsed "I'm just bad at maths", delivered as settled fact. By the upper primary years it often disguises itself as its opposite: the child who rushes, racing to be done rather than to be right, because every extra second spent inside a maths problem is a second spent somewhere painful. (That rushing, incidentally, gets misread as carelessness — but careless mistakes are almost never careless.)

The mechanism: solving every problem with half a brain

Here is the part that changes how you see it. Anxiety does not just make maths unpleasant. It makes maths harder — mechanically, measurably harder.

In a classic 2001 study, Mark Ashcraft and Elizabeth Kirk showed that maths anxiety consumes working memory — the small mental workspace where a child holds the numbers, the method and the running total of a problem. Worry is loud. The internal monologue of "I can't do this, everyone will see, what if I get it wrong" occupies the exact cognitive real estate the arithmetic needed. In their experiments, highly maths-anxious people performed markedly worse on problems that leaned on working memory — the effect sometimes called the "affective drop".

In plain terms: an anxious child is solving every problem with half a brain. Not metaphorically — operationally. The workspace is half-full of fear before the first digit goes in.

This is why bright children underperform, which is the detail that bewilders parents most. The ability is intact. The knowledge is often intact. But under anxiety, a child with less working memory available will drop carried digits, lose their place mid-procedure and blank on facts they knew perfectly well on the sofa yesterday. The exam is not measuring their maths; it is measuring their maths minus their fear — and a child who looks slow under that load may not be slow at all (slowness has its own, separate story).

Where it comes from — the uncomfortable, liberating truth

So where does the fear come from? Occasionally from a single humiliating moment — a blackboard, a laugh. But usually the origin is quieter and more systematic: maths anxiety is earned. It is built from repeated experiences of public failure — wrong answers in front of the class, red crosses down the page, the visible sag of a parent's shoulders.

And what produces repeated failure? Almost always an unnoticed skill gap from one or two grades earlier. The child missing a foundation isn't failing randomly; they are failing reliably, in the same spot, week after week — because every new topic keeps landing weight on the same missing brick. Each failure feels like fresh evidence about who they are. It is actually the same single gap, billing them again.

Maths anxiety isn't a personality trait. It's a scar — and scars form where the same spot gets hit again and again.

This is uncomfortable to hear, because it means the anxiety was preventable. But it is liberating for the same reason: it means the anxiety has fuel, and the fuel can be cut off. Find the gap, fix the gap, and the steady drip of failure that feeds the fear dries up. Nobody talks a child out of maths anxiety. Children are argued out of it by evidence — weeks of small, private, repeated success where failure used to live.

There is one more source, and it lives closer to home than any of us would like. In a 2015 study in Psychological Science, Erin Maloney, Sian Beilock and colleagues found that when parents with high maths anxiety helped their children with maths homework more often, their children learned less maths over the school year and developed more maths anxiety themselves. The anxiety was transmitted through the helping.

Read that finding kindly, because it deserves a kind reading: the problem was never that those parents loved too much or helped too much. It is that anxiety leaks — through sighs, through tension, through "I was never any good at this either", said lightly and remembered forever. The fix is not to stop helping. It is to change how we help.

What actually helps

The good news: the interventions that work are small, cheap and domestic. None of them requires a psychologist, though for severe cases one is worth having.

Daily success at the right level. The single most powerful treatment is a steady diet of low-stakes practice pitched so the child succeeds on roughly 7 or 8 questions out of 10 — not 3 out of 10, which confirms the fear, and not 10 out of 10, which teaches nothing. That success band usually lives below the child's current classwork, and going there is not a retreat; it is the treatment. Ten quiet minutes a day of mostly-getting-it-right rebuilds the child's private evidence file about themselves faster than anything else we know of (and small daily doses beat marathon sessions anyway).

Never use maths as a punishment. "No screens until you finish two worksheets" welds maths to misery in a child's mind, one evening at a time. Maths should sit in the same emotional category as reading before bed — routine, calm, done at the table with a snack.

Watch our own language. "I was bad at maths too" is meant as comfort and lands as prophecy — it tells a child that maths ability is inherited furniture, and theirs came broken. It is contagious in exactly the way Maloney and Beilock measured. Better sentences exist: "This one took me a while too — show me how far you got."

Separate the feeling from the fact. "This feels horrible" and "I can't do it" are different sentences, and children merge them. You can name the first honestly — "maths worry is a real thing, lots of people have it, it lies to you" — without conceding the second.

What doesn't help

The standard responses, unfortunately, are the ones that feed the fire.

More pressure. Consequences, comparisons with a sibling or a cousin, "you just need to focus" — all of it adds volume to the internal monologue that was already crowding out the arithmetic. Pressure is more anxiety, and anxiety was the problem.

More tutoring at the same wrong level. Doubling the hours of Grade 6 tutoring for a child whose gap lives in Grade 4 doubles the weekly dose of failure, now with a witness present. Tutoring works when it is aimed at the actual gap; until the gap is found, more hours mostly mean more evidence for the fear.

Timed tests, too early. A ticking clock is a working-memory tax on a child already paying one. Speed matters eventually, but it is the last floor of the building, not the foundation — accuracy first, then fluency, and only then gentle time pressure.

One family we heard from had a Grade 6 (Class 6 in India, Year 7 in England) daughter who cried before every maths test — despite, or perhaps partly because of, two tutoring sessions a week. On advice, her parents dropped one of the sessions and replaced it with ten minutes of daily practice pitched one level below her classwork. For a month she scored 8 out of 10 most days, privately, at the kitchen table, with nothing riding on any of it. The crying stopped before the marks moved — which is the detail worth sitting with, because it shows what the tears were actually about. The marks followed a term later, the way marks tend to follow once the fear gets out of the way.

The order of operations

If you take one thing from this article, take the sequence: the anxiety is real, the anxiety runs on fuel, and the fuel is repeated failure from an unfound gap. Fix the gap, arrange a daily supply of genuine success, keep your own maths ghosts out of your voice — and the fear, deprived of new evidence, quietly loses its case.
