It usually happens during homework. You glance over your child's shoulder and see it: the fingers moving. Not openly, the way a six-year-old counts — under the table, half-hidden by a sleeve, with a quick check to see whether you noticed.
That detail is worth pausing on. Under the table. Somewhere along the way — a classmate's laugh, a teacher's frown, an overheard "aren't you a bit old for that?" — someone already made your child feel that fingers are shameful. So before we talk about the maths, one thing needs saying clearly: the hiding is a bigger problem than the counting.
Here is what the fingers actually mean at age 9, when they matter, when they do not, and how to help them retire gracefully — without ever once telling your child to stop.
First, the reassurance — and the surprise
Fingers are not the enemy. They are not even a detour. According to the neuroscience, they are part of the road.
In a 2015 study, Ilaria Berteletti and James Booth found that when children aged 8 to 13 solved arithmetic problems without using their fingers at all, the brain regions associated with finger perception still lit up — the brain was, in effect, consulting its internal map of the hands to think about number.
That finding fits a much older intuition: fingers are the first place a child ever feels that five is five. The Stanford mathematics educator Jo Boaler has argued publicly that stopping children from using their fingers can actually hinder their numerical development — that fingers are a bridge into number, and kicking the bridge away does not make anyone cross the river faster.
So no — finger counting is not bad, not babyish, and not evidence of anything wrong with your child's brain. Quite the opposite.
Now the honest part
And yet. You did not search for this article because your child used fingers once. You searched because they are 9 — Grade 4 (Class 4 in India, Year 5 in England) — and the fingers come out for everything.
Here is the honest version: fingers as a stage are healthy; fingers as a permanent strategy at 9 or 10 are a signal. Not a signal that your child is weak at maths — a signal that a specific set of small skills, the number bonds and basic facts, never became automatic. The fingers are not the problem. The fingers are the messenger, reporting a fluency gap from two or three years ago that nobody noticed at the time. Researchers who study how children learn arithmetic describe a fairly consistent developmental arc: counting-all (8 + 5 means counting out eight, then five, then all thirteen), then counting-on (starting from 8 and counting five more), then derived facts (8 + 5 is 8 + 2 to make 10, then 3 more), and finally retrieval — the answer simply arrives, free of charge.
Every child climbs those four steps. The worry at age 9 is never the fingers; it is being stuck on step one or two for the same small facts, month after month, paying full price for sums that should long since have become free.
The distinction that actually matters
So how do you tell a healthy stage from a stuck one? Watch for one thing: what the fingers are being used for.
Fingers for new, hard territory: fine. A 9-year-old who reaches for fingers while wrestling with an unfamiliar problem — elapsed time, a tricky word problem, the first week of a new topic — is doing exactly what a thoughtful mathematician does: reaching for a tool when the load gets heavy. This needs no intervention at all.
Fingers for the same small facts, every time: a fluency gap. A 9-year-old who counts 8 + 5 on fingers today, counted it yesterday, and will count it again tomorrow — the three-hundredth performance of the same sum — is not using a tool. They are stuck on the first step of the arc, and every future topic will tax them for it. Long division, fractions, mental multiplication: all of them assume the basic facts arrive instantly, and all of them wobble when the facts arrive by expedition instead.
Fingers aren't the problem. Fingers doing the same sum for the three-hundredth time are the problem.
One evening of quiet observation will tell you which child you have. Sit nearby during homework and notice which sums summon the fingers. If it is the frontier, relax. If it is 7 + 6 — again — read on.
The fix is never "stop using your fingers"
This is the part most adults get backwards. Banning fingers does not create fluency; it just removes the child's only working strategy and replaces it with guessing and shame. The fingers must not be pushed out. They must be made redundant — by making the facts so familiar that the hands retire on their own, the way training wheels come off a bicycle nobody is wobbling on any more.
What makes facts familiar is not lectures, and at this stage it is not speed drills either. It is short, warm, daily retrieval of a small set of high-value patterns:
- Number bonds to 10 — the pairs that make ten (7 + 3, 6 + 4), until they are wallpaper.
- Bonds to 20, built on the tens.
- Doubles (6 + 6, 8 + 8) — children learn these strangely early and love them.
- Near-doubles (6 + 7 is a double plus one).
- Bridging through 10 — the crown jewel: 8 + 5 becomes "8 + 2 makes 10, then 3 more". This one strategy alone retires more fingers than any other.
Notice what these have in common: they are strategies, not memorisation by brute force. The child is learning to see numbers as things that snap apart and together — which is the foundation everything else stands on, times tables included.
A 10-minute, 4-week plan
Here is a plan modest enough to survive real family life. Ten minutes a day, roughly four weeks, at the kitchen table in Toronto, Nairobi, Pune or Manchester — the maths is the same everywhere.
Week 1 — bonds to 10. Flashcards, a pack of playing cards ("find the partner that makes ten"), coins from whatever currency lives in the fruit bowl — cents, pence, rupees. Keep it oral and quick.
Week 2 — doubles and near-doubles. "What's 7 + 7? So what's 7 + 8?" Let the child catch you doing it wrong occasionally; correcting a parent is the best retrieval practice ever devised.
Week 3 — bridging through 10. Say the strategy out loud together — "8 and 2 makes 10, and 3 more is 13" — until the child starts finishing your sentence.
Week 4 — mix everything. Shuffle all three weeks together in tiny doses. Mixed retrieval is what makes it stick.
And two things not to do. No shaming — never "you're too old for fingers", never a sigh at the moving hands; the hands are allowed for as long as they are needed. And no speed pressure yet — no timers, no races, no apps that flash red. Accuracy first, comfort second; speed arrives later on its own, as a by-product. If ten minutes a day sounds suspiciously small, it is not — small daily doses beat weekend marathons for reasons that are about memory, not discipline.
One mother we heard from noticed her 9-year-old son hiding his hands during homework — fingers working furiously below the table edge, face arranged to look casual. She resisted the obvious move. When the fingers retire
Watch what the hands are doing, not whether they are moving. Fingers on the frontier are a tool; fingers on the same old facts are a message — and the message is a small, specific, entirely fixable fluency gap, not a verdict on your child.
